Syrian Intelligence’s General Security Directorate Syrian is divided into three divisions: internal,
foreign and Palestine. The GSD is a brutal and repressive secret police agency that is used to control the Syrian people.
Israeli Defense Force (IDF) is Israel’s ground, air and naval force. They fall under the command of a single general staff.
Conscription is mandatory for men and women over age 18 for everyone except Israeli-Arabs. Failure is not an option for the
IDF as the result would be catastrophic for Israel.
See Hong 5.
Imaging Intelligence (IMINT) refers to imagery captured from satellite and reconnaissance aircraft. Imagery has
been expanded to include the full light spectrum (e.g. ultraviolet, infrared).
Designates KH-12 imaging satellites. According to open sources, this appears to be the last of the
Keyhole series. It is also known as KH-11B or KH-11/Improved. Basically this is a 14 ton Hubble telescope pointed
earthward.
A Canadian company that originally developed PROMIS for the DOJ using a law enforcement grant. The original
work was completed in the late seventies. INSLAW entered into a contract with DOJ to deliver 42 systems. This where it gets
murky—it appears DOJ hijacked the software suite. Eventually the NSA and private contractors modified it. The result is the
espionage tool described in Firewall.
Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) is a well-established technique to identify the reflectivity centers of a target.
This provides a two-dimensional resolution that permits identification and classification.
The Islamic Jihad Organization - the al-Aqsa Battalions (Munazzamat al-Jihad al-Islami - Kata’ib al-Aqsa)
was founded under the religious guidance of Sheikh `As`ad Bayyud al-Tamimi in Jordan in 1982, with the support of Fatah
activists. It carried out its first terrorist operation in October 1983, by killing an Israeli citizen in Hebron. The faction tried to
carry out other operations in the 1980s but failed. During the Intifada it became active under the name of the “Islamic Jihad
Organization - the al-Aqsa Battalions”. Some of its activists maintained good relations both with Iran and Sudan. Its religious
leader, `As`ad al-Tamimi, was also a supporter of the Iranian revolution, and was arrested or confined several times by the
Jordanian authorities. Formally the group is still active in Jordan, but has no supporters in the Territories.
Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS) is comprised of fixed, mobile, and deployable acoustic arrays that
provide vital tactical cueing to ASW forces. IUSS provides the Navy with its primary means of submarine detection both
nuclear and diesel.
